Cat6 vs Cat6A is the question that comes up in the middle of almost every cabling quote we write. Somewhere between the site walk and the signature, a business owner asks the same thing: do I actually need the more expensive cable?
It’s a fair question. The price gap is real, and nobody wants to pay for capability they’ll never touch. But the honest answer isn’t “always buy the better one.” It depends on what’s going in your ceiling, how long the runs are, and what you plan to plug in three years from now.
So let’s break this down the way we’d walk through it with you on a site visit. No jargon, no upsell.

Now here’s what those rows actually mean for your building.
What Cat6 does well
Cat6 is the workhorse. It handles gigabit speeds without breaking a sweat, and for the overwhelming majority of what sits on a business network — computers, printers, phones, card readers, POS terminals — gigabit is far more than enough.
A Toast terminal doesn’t need 10 gigabit. Neither does your front-desk PC or your back-office printer. Those devices are limited by the internet connection coming into the building long before the cable becomes the bottleneck.
Cat6 is also thinner and more flexible, which matters more than people expect. In a tight ceiling, a crowded conduit, or an older strip-center space with limited pathways, that flexibility saves real installation time. And installation time is money.
For a lot of the commercial cabling installations we do across Houston, Cat6 is the right call for the majority of the drops in the building.
What Cat6A adds
Cat6A (“A” for augmented) doubles the bandwidth to 500 MHz. The headline benefit is that it carries 10 gigabit the full 100-meter distance, where standard Cat6 starts to run out of room somewhere around the 55-meter mark depending on conditions.
But the speed is honestly the least interesting part.
The bigger deal is alien crosstalk — interference that bleeds between cables bundled together in the same tray or conduit. Cat6A is built with tighter twists and usually a shield or a thicker separator specifically to fight it. In a bundle of 24 cables running above a ceiling, that engineering matters.
Cat6A also handles heat better. That becomes important the moment you start powering devices over the cable, which almost everyone does now.
The Cat6 vs Cat6A decision usually comes down to three things
1. Wireless access points
This one isn’t really a judgment call anymore.
The TIA standard that governs commercial building cabling was updated with a specific requirement for wireless: when balanced twisted-pair cabling is used, a minimum of two Category 6A or higher cabling runs must be installed to each wireless access point. Two runs, both Cat6A, per AP. Not one. Not Cat6.
The reasoning is straightforward: modern access points are the highest-throughput devices in most buildings, they draw a lot of power over the cable, and running a second cable now is dramatically cheaper than opening the ceiling again later. If we’re designing business WiFi for your space, Cat6A to the APs is baked into the plan.
2. Power over Ethernet
Your cabling isn’t just carrying data anymore. It’s carrying electricity to access points, cameras, door controllers, digital signage, and increasingly to speakers and amplifiers.
The current PoE standard, IEEE 802.3bt, pushes up to 90 watts down a single cable using all four pairs. The Ethernet Alliance PoE certification program exists specifically because interoperability and power delivery got complicated enough to need one.
Here’s the part that gets skipped: power generates heat, and heat degrades cable performance. Bundle 24 cables together, run high-wattage PoE through all of them, and the center of that bundle gets warm. Cat6A’s thicker copper and better construction dissipate that heat more effectively.
If you’re powering a lot of devices — and if you’re adding a commercial audio system or a camera setup, you are — Cat6A to those locations is worth the money.

3. How long the run is
Short runs to nearby desks? Cat6 is fine.
Long runs from an IDF closet to the far corner of a warehouse, across a large restaurant, or up to a second floor? That’s where Cat6 starts giving up performance and Cat6A earns its keep.
We measure this during the site walk rather than guessing from a floor plan. Cable paths are almost never straight lines.
The approach most Houston businesses actually need
Here’s what rarely comes up in the Cat6 vs Cat6A articles you’ll find online: it’s not an either/or decision.
Most well-designed buildings use both.
Cat6A goes to the locations that need it — access points, PoE-heavy devices, long runs, anything feeding a future upgrade. Cat6 handles the routine drops where 10 gigabit is never going to be relevant.
That mixed approach costs less than running Cat6A everywhere and performs far better than running Cat6 everywhere. It just requires someone to actually design the system before pulling wire, instead of picking one spec and defaulting to it across the whole job.
That’s the difference a licensed Professional Engineer with 17+ years in low-voltage work brings to a cabling project. Not fancier cable. Better decisions about where it goes.
A note on Houston buildings specifically
A few things make this decision play out differently here than it would in, say, Denver.
Heat above the ceiling. Plenum spaces in Houston buildings get hot, especially above commercial kitchens and in older buildings with tired HVAC. Ambient heat plus PoE heat stacks up. It’s another quiet argument for Cat6A in those specific runs.
Older retrofits. A lot of Houston restaurants and retail shops move into spaces built decades ago, with tight pathways and whatever cabling the last tenant left behind. Cat6A is stiffer and has a larger bend radius, so it doesn’t always fit where you’d want it. Sometimes the building makes the choice for you.
Humidity and exterior runs. Any cable heading toward a patio, a drive-through, or an outbuilding needs the right jacket rating, and that’s a separate conversation from category. Don’t let anyone hand-wave it.

Ignore “Cat6e”
Quick warning, because it comes up on almost every quote comparison.
There is no such thing as Cat6e. It’s not a TIA category. It’s a marketing label some manufacturers use for Cat6 cable that tests a little better than the minimum. It might be perfectly good cable. But it’s Cat6, and it should be priced like Cat6.
If a bid lists Cat6e, ask what standard it’s certified against. The answer will tell you a lot about who you’re dealing with.
Same goes for Cat7 and Cat8 in a typical commercial building. Cat8 is a data center product designed for very short, very fast switch-to-switch runs. It has almost no application in a restaurant, an office, or a retail floor, and anyone selling it to you for one is either confused or hoping you are.
What the price difference actually looks like
Cat6A costs more three ways: the cable itself, the jacks and patch panels rated to match it, and the labor to route a thicker, stiffer cable through your building.
That last one surprises people. The material markup is manageable. The install time is what moves the number.
Which is exactly why the mixed approach makes sense. You pay the Cat6A premium where it buys you something, and you don’t where it doesn’t.
Whatever category ends up in your ceiling, the thing that actually determines whether your network is reliable is the installation: clean terminations, proper routing away from electrical, labeled drops, documented paths, and every single run tested and certified. Great cable installed badly performs worse than good cable installed well. Every time.
